Heavy Metal Exposures on Freshwater Snail Pomacea insularum: Understanding Its Biomonitoring Potentials

چکیده
The present investigation focused on the toxicity test of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn), utilizing two groups juvenile adult apple snail Pomacea insularum (Gastropod, Thiaridae) with mortality as endpoint. For snails, median lethal concentrations (LC50) values based 48 72 h decreased in following order: Cu < Ni Pb Cd Zn. LC50 mussel was more susceptible to than other four metal exposures, although juveniles were sensitive adults because former had lower latter. This study provided essential baseline information for five toxicities using P. a organism, allowing comparisons acute sensitivity this species metals. In conclusion, demonstrated that biomonitor model organism assess heavy risk factors severe toxicities. A comparison these metals those freshwater gastropods revealed equally Therefore, can be recommended good ecosystems.

Biomonitoring of Airborne Heavy Metal Contamination
During the last few decades, heavy metal contamination of biotic component of environment has attracted the attention of many investigators. The main reason of these researches based on the heavy metal concentration may have a potential hazard in our food chain after a long period of procrastination. Using biological materials in the determination of environmental pollution as indicators is a c...
متن کاملClimate and pH Predict the Potential Range of the Invasive Apple Snail (Pomacea insularum) in the Southeastern United States
Predicting the potential range of invasive species is essential for risk assessment, monitoring, and management, and it can also inform us about a species' overall potential invasiveness. However, modeling the distribution of invasive species that have not reached their equilibrium distribution can be problematic for many predictive approaches. We apply the modeling approach of maximum entropy ...
متن کاملPhysiological response to low temperature in the freshwater apple snail, Pomacea canaliculata (Gastropoda: Ampullariidae).
Cold hardiness of the freshwater apple snail, Pomacea canaliculata, varies seasonally. We investigated lethal factors and physiological changes arising from exposure of P. canaliculata to low temperatures. Snails did not survive freezing. The supercooling point of cold-acclimated (cold tolerant) snails (-6.6+/-0.8 degrees C) did not differ significantly from that of non-acclimated ones (-7.1+/-...
متن کاملBiomonitoring Heavy Metal Pollution Using an Aquatic Apex Predator, the American Alligator, and Its Parasites
Monitoring the bioaccumulation of chemical elements within various organismal tissues has become a useful tool to survey current or chronic levels of heavy metal exposure within an environment. In this study, we compared the bioaccumulations of As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, Se, and Zn between the American alligator, Alligator mississippiensis, and its parasites in order to establish their use as bioindic...
متن کاملAssessing developmental toxicant exposures via biomonitoring.
Most of the developmental effects that populations experience are believed to be linked with their exposure scenario and/or their susceptibility to these exposures. In environmental public health, most studies have focused on exposures to environmental chemicals but certainly other environmental factors and susceptibility factors must be considered. Our laboratory assesses exposure to environme...
